5 Places To Search For Used Trucks Near You

by Earl Burton

Finding a used truck that's in your price and quality range can be difficult. Here are the five places you should start your search to find the vehicle that suits you best.

1. Local dealers are where most people start their search for a used truck. Dealers will have a variety of trucks for you to see and will provide you with accurate history on the vehicle. This is also the only place where you can find certified used trucks. The prices might be more expensive, but the trucks will be higher quality and you'll be offered financing options, which can offset the blow to your pocket. Check out dealers like Auto Max for more information.

2. Classified ads in the newspaper or online are the next place to go. People who advertise in classifieds are usually in a hurry to get rid of their truck. Look for the letters "OBO" in these ads, which stands for "or best offer." This means that the seller is willing to negotiate prices. There are two major downsides to this. First, the sellers might keep you strung along waiting for a better deal and even sell the truck out from under you if someone offers more, even if you've already agreed to pick up the truck. Second, you'll really have to inspect the vehicle to make sure it is in good condition. It's not uncommon for people to sell a truck that "runs great" but in reality has severe issues.

3. Estate sales and auctions are an often overlooked way to find used trucks. Look for estate sales advertised online or in the newspaper, especially for those with a barn or garage clear-out. People who own barns and large garages often tend to own trucks, which might not be advertised in the estate sale listing. Call ahead to see if there are any vehicles being sold. Some estate sales are run via auction, and the vehicles tend to go for a decent price.

4. Auto auctions are also a great way to find used trucks. While most auctions are wholesale or for dealers only, some will be open to the public. You'll have to compete against other people to get the truck you want, but the excitement is part of the experience. Just don't get too carried away and bid on something that busts your budget. There may also be a minimal entry fee to enter the auction, but you'll have more control over the price of a truck than at a dealer.

5. Advertising yourself is a way you can take your search into your own hands. Instead of searching endlessly for the used truck that you want, try advertising what you want to buy. Write your own classified ad and print out posters. Hang the posters in tractor or farm supply stores, where the customers usually own trucks. Seeing your ad might convince someone to give up the truck they've been thinking about selling. Make sure you give all of your contact information, what you're looking for, and your price range. Good luck!
