3 Factors to Focus on If You're Considering an SUV

by Earl Burton

When it comes time to buy a new vehicle, you are probably overwhelmed by your options. From a sporty coupe or a classic sedan to a pickup truck or van, there are many options to consider. Thankfully, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a great model for most drivers and their needs. Of course, once you decide an SUV is right for you, you have more choices to make. Here are a few key factors to focus on when buying an SUV.

Size

One of the most important factors you need to focus on is the size of your SUV. All sport utility vehicles are not created equal, so you will need to decide how large the vehicle will be and how much seating you need.

There are larger SUVs that offer seating for 8 people, but a mid-size SUV may be sufficient if you need less seating. These sport utility vehicles usually accommodate passengers somewhat comfortably using three rows of seats.

SUVs are also available in a more compact size, offering room and seating space for 4 or 5 people. In some cases, these compact sport utility vehicles may not have a great deal of leg or head room, but they are options to consider.

2x4 or 4x4

The type of driving you plan to do is also a factor to consider when selecting your new SUV.

If you will be driving around town or on the highway, a two-wheel drive vehicle is probably sufficient. If you are planning to take your SUV on harsh terrain or your local climate experiences a great deal of wintry precipitation, opt for a 4x4 sport utility vehicle.

It is important to note that 2x4 vehicles are more fuel efficient than 4x4 vehicles. However, a 4x4 SUV may keep you safer while driving in different types of weather.

Safety

Whether you have a family or not, you want your SUV to be as safe as possible, so choose a model that has all of the latest safety features and equipment.

Rear view cameras not only help guide you while reversing, but they can also prevent you from hitting a child, animal, object, or another vehicle while backing up.

Blind-spot monitoring is also an option you should consider. This feature uses sensors to monitor blind spots in your vehicle, which helps prevent accidents while switching lanes or reversing.

The basic design and handling of an SUV can also help keep you safe. Certain cars, such as Volvo models, are known to be safer than others. Not only does this make them safer to drive, it can also mean they are more affordable to insure.

Buying an SUV does not have to be a challenge. This guide will help you narrow down your search for the perfect sport utility vehicle.
